*They had raided the kitchens as planned.....he devoured slice after slice of vennison, all the while trying hard to answer his daughter's barrage of questions. Cook was chuckling as he sliced through another steak and seered it in the pan. Ellissia asked of the birds and the trees.....had he seen the deer and were there foxes and wolves. He had nodded between mouthfuls and swigs of ale.....making her beam with joy.
He would be honoured to tell a tale or two, another time, but the servants would have to wait, for he was tired from his journey and besides....he had promised Dream he was all hers. She had simply blushed and waved his words away with her hand...so content in her heart to just sit and watch him. He was home...at ease with his family....the simple act of eating a meal in the kitchens had drawn a crowd....all eager to bid the First Knight a welcome home.
She admired his attitude....always had done....nobody was beneath him...nor above, all were equal in his eyes...and he treated them with the same respect he would ask for himself. Smiling more.....she bid them thankyou and took the tea tray that had been prepared, they would enjoy such within their chambers....and Ellissia was near ready for her bed. He thanked them also as he lifted a weary little one from the chair, allowing her sleepy head to lay upon his shoulder....she would have much to dream of this night.
It seemed strange now....sharing her with him....watching as he tucked her up within her bed...kissing her face as her eyes tried so hard to stay open. Strange aye....but such a delight...they had missed him so terribly but perhaps got used to being alone. She leaned down and stroked her daughter's hair from her sweet angelic face.....watching as sleep finally took her from them for a while....peace...quiet....but this night she was not alone within their chambers.
She had looked at him....smiling warmly as he took her into his arms, they did not speak of much....simply drinking the tea and watching the fire for a while. He always needed this time.....she knew that....time to reflect..become used to being home again, she never questioned, but waited, knowing he would speak of whatever he needed to...when the time was right. He stoked the fire.....another strange feeling for her....she was not used to it...but gladly allowed him his duties as protector....provider...her hero.
The night had kept them...safe and together...the first time in so long. They had laid together as man and Wife....two lost souls that now had found each other again, the Moon shone down...the Stars showed the way.....silently guiding.....nothing else seemed to matter, and if her life on Earth had ended then.....for that moment, she did not care. She was fulfilled once more...complete again as she held him to her.
He had slept soundly for a while.....then became restless....she was awake...simply watching. If she had closed her eyes...she would have missed a moment of him...she listened to his breathing....watching the rise and fall of his chest. Often her breath had caught within her throat....she almost sobbed with relief. To have him again....to be able to love him...to share even a smile....'twas what she hoped and waited for each new day. She knew he would go again.....but for now....he was here with her....their small family was complete again. She could ask for no more than that.
As she watched him now.... he battled within...his eyelids moving quickly...with a purpose. His brow furrowed deeper...his breathing hard and laboured. She leaned over and kissed him...wondering of what he dreamed. A finger gently stroked him as he moved...he turned over then and she traced the line of his spine, laying her face against his flesh...she snuggled closer, his warm body such a comfort. Her own eyelids were winning they were heavy...it had been such a day.
Glancing to the window....she saw the candle had burned down.....smiling softly she would not have to light it.....not for this night at least, and she closed her eyes, finally allowing sleep to take her.*
