Sofia bint Nasrullah Windstorm, CS is in the Infirmary, and says to ALL: **The kind and much-blessed and esteemed Aunt who had sent the small chest full of precious parchments had taken time to cose plants which were not only the most common, but had the most uses. Garlic for instance listed more than sixty remedies, while onions listed twenty-seven. At the moment she's perusing a list of remedies from gourds. Many of what her aunt had chosen were common household vegetables in the Middle East and Mediterranean, but were common enough ehre as well. Actually it was interesting to her, to see how many simple basic foods the two nations actually had in common, and how much in common wiht the Romans
(09:50:55)
Sofia bint Nasrullah Windstorm, CS is in the Infirmary, and says to ALL: The next one she picks up just happens to be the one on onions, a staple of middle eastern diet and medicine for millenia...wrinkling her nose because she personally can't stand the taste if the things...but her eyes scan the page as she sips her tea, reading the first-century words of Pliny the Elder....CHAP. 20.—ONIONS: TWENTY-SEVEN REMEDIES. There are no such things in existence as wild onions. The cultivated onion is employed for the cure of dimness1 of sight, the patient being made to smell at it till tears come into the eyes: it is still better even if the eyes are rubbed with the juice. It is said, too, that onions are soporific,2 and that they are a cure for ulcerations of the mouth, if chewed with bread. Fresh onions in vinegar, applied topically, or dried onions with wine and honey, are good for the bites of dogs, care being taken not to remove the bandage till the end of a couple of days. Applied, too, in the same way, they are good for healing excoriations. Roasted in hot ashes, many persons have applied them topically, with barley meal, for defluxions of the eyes and ulcerations of the genitals. The juice, too, is employed as an ointment for sores of the eyes, albugo,3 and argema.4 Mixed with honey, it is used as a liniment for the stings5 of serpents and all kinds of ulcerous sores. In combination with woman's milk, it is employed for affections of the ears; and in cases of singing in the ears and hardness of hearing, it is injected into those organs with goose-grease or honey. In cases where persons have been suddenly struck dumb, it has been administered to them to drink, mixed with water. In cases, too, of toothache, it is sometimes introduced into the mouth as a gargle for the teeth; it is an excellent remedy also for all kinds of wounds made by animals, scorpions more particularly.
(10:02:03)
Sofia bint Nasrullah Windstorm, CS is in the Infirmary, and says to ALL: **It takes her some while to read over all the uses, astounded at the sheer variety of them. She herself can't stand the taste of them, but having read that parchment gains a whole new respect for the humble vegetable. Next her eyes wander to the page on garlic, covered front and back in very fine writing...(http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.02.0137%3Abook%3D20%3Achapter%3D23 it's too long to post verbatim in here)

DON'T TRY THIS STUFF AT HOME. These passages that sound so technical come from the first century and the middle ages. These are posted for roleplay and fun-to-read purposes only. Thank you. (just in case somebody has a lapse of good sense)

Over the past several days spring and the first signs of a coming warm summer had been benign to the lands of Windstorm. Doing stable duties when the sun was shining hot from above was a real chore, even more so working on the fields to keep them in tip top shape. Gernot's duties entailed some simple planning of crops on a smaller byfield near the main fields near the castle. his father rainald saw it an important lesson to learn the plight of the common fieldsmen and understand what difficulties could arise should weather or soil conditions not be as wished for a certain crop.
While again directing a small group of pages and squires to help take a good stock of the soil conditions, Gernot's "men" had stumbled across a small badger pub which apparently had a broken leg. it only took a few miniutes until he had made up his mind as to what to do with the critter. When all their work was done, Gernot and Isaiah, wrapped the small badger into one of their cloaks to carry it to the healer lady.
Lately, Gernot knew Lady Sofia had received a whole bunch of new scrolls and books dealing with remedies to be made from common vegetables. Like ... onions. Gernot had begun his lessons about healing practices and medicine with the Moroccan lady, and now was just the time to put his newly found knowledge to a test.
The two boys slipped into the kitchen which was deserted at the moment. good! "So, Isaiah, see if you can find some onions ... or better still, find some garlic! LOTS of garlic! We will need that for the wound to help it heal until we bring him to Lady Sofia"
The smaller boy nodded but then cocked his head. "How do you know it's a he? Could be a girl too!"
Gernot looked at the small being wrapped in the cloak before he sat it down onto the table, unwrapping the cloth from the young badger. "Hmmmm, naaah, it looks quite fierce, ya know? Badgers are always fierce and therefore males, so one of the stable boys said." The stable boy had forgoten to mention where, then, all the little badger pubs came from. " And since this one looks really positively fierce...let's name it .... Kylot!" Kylot being a mixture of names between Sir Kyle, whom Gernot admired quite a bit, and Lancelot, another knight he had heard from his father when he was a child and needed some story to find some sleep.
Garlic and onion were soon found and Gernot began to prepare a paste from the two ingrediences, mixing them with soem water and wine. He wasn't so sure about this recipe because it had a most strange and stringent smell, but since such was written in the scrolls of Lady Sofia, it must be doing some good!
Carefully Isaiah held Kylot still while Gernot washed the broken and open wounded fore leg of the badger pub, then wrapping some linen around it and tying it securely around the paw. That would do alright.
"Now, we should let Lady Sofia have a look. I'm sure she will approve! Kylot will be ok in no time, you'll see!"
Quickly the two boys made their way to the infirmary and indeed they were in luck. Lady Sofia was in, again persuing her readings.
Gernot knocked on the door to make themselves known. "Lady Sofia, we bring you a patient. If you'll please have a look? Kylot might need something to go to sleep, maybe you can give him something?"
Both boys stoo in the infirmary, awaiting the lady's help with their little new pet.

Sofia bint Nasrullah Windstorm, CS is in the Infirmary, and says to ALL: Come in....*She called out when the tapping came at the door and the two boys came in. They held a bundle of something tiny and protesting, with small chitters and indignant squeaks. "Please M'Ldy Sofia it's broke it's leg can ye 'eal it?". She stops, blinking. Their faith in her abilities is quite a compliment, but can she handle a hurting wild animal?
(20:01:08)
Sofia bint Nasrullah Windstorm, CS is in the Infirmary, and says to ALL: Hmmm....he looks very frightened, and thirsty, I should think. Isaiah, go outside and get a grass stem, such as you boys use to drink water up from the stream. Gernot, give me the small one, and go to fetch fresh goat's milk. **As shespoke she had grabbed a basket and laid a clean cloth in the bottom, and now laid the tiny panting creature in it and laid a towel over the top as the two boys ran off. While they were thus occupied, she swiftly wet a cloth in the willow bark and fig leaf brew on the hearth, and gently unwrapped the little creature. Agile digits lightly wipe off what mess she can, then she rubs it gently all over and re-covers the basket setting it near the eharth**
(20:02:50)
Sofia bint Nasrullah Windstorm, CS is in the Infirmary, and says to ALL: **About now Isaiah returns with several perfect hollow grass stems, and taking a mouthfull of water Sofia sticks one straw under the edge of the baby badger's lip at the back corner, then places her lips to teh other end, and gently sends droplet after droplet of water into the baby's mouth**
(20:08:30)
Sofia bint Nasrullah Windstorm, CS is in the Infirmary, and says to ALL: **At first the little badger resisted, but then instinct and reflex took over and soon it slurped greedily at hte straw grasping with it's good forepaw. In a minute she sets him down again..checks...yep definitely a him...then gets a bottle of hemp syrup from the shelves. When Gernot returns with a small cup of fresh sweet goat's milk, Sofi mixes ina generous spoonfull of the hemp syrup tinting the warm milk bright green. Then, exactly as before, she takes a mouthfull and with one of the hollow stems gets the injured baby badger to sdrink. The purpose of the hemp syrup is as a sedative, she can't really clean or tend the cub's wound till it's asleep. All this she explains to the boys in between teding the little animal, and now sends them on their way**
(20:21:17)
Sofia bint Nasrullah Windstorm, CS is in the Infirmary, and says to ALL: **After a belly full of warm milk, she realizes teh little creature needs further assistance with it's immature biology. Wrinkling her nose, she takes some rags and proceeds to do what's needed, then once more cleans the wee cub with the willow bark and fig leaf brew. By now it's belly full of warm milk, vastly increased comfort, and sheer stress and exhaustion combine to make the cub fall asleep, and soon it's safely, deeply asleep. Now with a sigh she cleans the broken leg thoroughly, and using a long needle extracts a couple slivers of bone. Next she sets teh bone...even sedated the badger cub squeaks and jerks, then she uses a strip of rag and a small straight twig to splint the broken limb. Now she washes everything yet again, and tucks the little crittur back into the basket and covers it, where it would sleep safely for many hours yet**
Edited to Add: 20:30:46)
Sofia bint Nasrullah Windstorm, CS is in the Infirmary, and says to ALL: **But something isn't quite settled right in her mind yet, and with care she uncovers the sleeping cub and unties the splint, looking at the ragged and thin, ruined, skin there with furrowed brows. Then she brightens, and goes to a locked chest. From here she takes a generous pinch of precious Myrrh beaten to fine powder, and re-locks the chest. Next she mixes the myrrh into a spoonfull of honey, then gently washes the raw ruined tissue by dribbling the willow and fig brew....tenderly straightening and aligning everything she can, then pouring the myrrh and honey over the tiny limb, before re-splinting and re-binding it. With care she draws teh tiny limb closer to it's wee body and binds it there, to keep everything immobile. Now for a couple minutes her fingertips emulate how the mother would caress the babe, short light strokes as if grooming, then snuggling it close to ehr body to warm up again for a while. Seeing the necessity, she simply tucks it into the basket and brings it with her out to the great hall**

(11:41:10) Gernot de Sennis is in the Infirmary, and says to ALL: Blissfully absentminded Gernot sits in front of the little basket where Kylot is sleeping in, watching the badger cup like a motherhen her chicks. Gently the young lad pats the animal who keeps sleeping, licking its lips as if to want to suckle some
(11:45:39) Gernot de Sennis is in the Infirmary, and says to ALL: "You're hungry? you want something, yes? Lesseee...." Quickly Gernot gets up and looks around the shelves and around the table near the fireplace - where might Lady sofia keep his food? or milk, or whatever she is giving him.....ah, there, a vial with grass strah, like the one she had asked Isaiah to fetch the other day;
(11:48:55) Gernot de Sennis is in the Infirmary, and says to ALL: Some milk would be good now...or maybe some wine? Without further hesitation, gernot makes a rush for the kitchen to fetch some wine and milk, then returns to the infirmary and the little pup in the basket
(11:49:40) Gernot de Sennis is in the Infirmary, and says to ALL: Carefully he mixes some milk and wine in a bowl and then sucks some of the liquid up with the straw, placing one end of it against the mouth of the sleeping baby badger
(11:54:52) Gernot de Sennis is in the Infirmary, and says to ALL: The little critter at first balks a bit but then seems to get the taste for the milk wine and begins to lick up the droplets Gernot lets drop onto his lips
(11:58:21) Gernot de Sennis is in the Infirmary, and says to ALL: "That's a good boy! Fine Kylot, good boy!"
(11:59:09) Gernot de Sennis is in the Infirmary, and says to ALL: Proud with his success, Gernot settles down and takes a sip...from the wine instead of the milk fask! "Hmmm....not bad!" He takes another....and another....
(11:59:31) Gernot de Sennis is in the Infirmary, and says to ALL: Soon badger and boy are peacefully sleeping next to one another by the warming fire!
