Sitting down again by the fireplace in my favorite chair I take up where I left off in my reading from the College of arms) Now where was I? here we are. The colors of Or(Gold) and Argeant (Silver) are called metals and the colors of Sable(Black), Vert (Green), Azure (Blue), Gules(Red) and Purpure (Purple) we shall call tintures. The first rule to observe in creating Arms it that No metal shall be place upon another or a tinture upon another. This is to say that think of the arms laid out befoer ye as a cake. One layer being built upon the other. Thus if the first layer were a metal (Or and Argeant) then the next layer need be a tinture such as Sable, Azure, etc.
The first layer is called the field. The field may be divided in many ways. An example of this would be a verticle line down the center of the field this is known as per pale. There are many others as well and we shall discuss them later. let us begin with a simple design. First we will start with a field of Per pale Sable and Azure. This is to say the field is divided in the center verticully. On the left fascing the field is the tinture of Sable and next to it is a division of Azure. Now we shall build upon it a design or device as it is known.
Upon the field per pale sable and azure we shall place a mythical bird known as the Phoenix. This particlular bird shall be Argeant. So we would say Per pale sable and azure a phoenix argeant. next we will add a bit of artistic touch by adding flames a phoenix does rise from and do so in a proper fashsion. Thus the Blazon or written discription would be "Per pale Sable and Azure a Phoenix Argeant rising from flames proper. This particular set or arms doest belong to Duke Roland Stormbringer of Saxony.
*laughs heartly at the fact my arms are the one used in this example. perhaps it is because my own Scribe and Herald was the one who penned this book*
Furthermore arms can display a union of households brought together in marriage. This union would be displayed in Quarter for example. The field would be divided in 4 equal parts. They are numbered for reference from your left top most as 1 then the one next to it 2 the one below 1 is 3 and the one next to it 4. So we shall use Duke Roland again. His device when then be divided as thus on the first and forth the personal device of the duke then on the second and third the device of the arms of the house within the lady did reside. This most often done with marriages of great house such as the arms of a royal house with another to show the joining and bond between them.
I lay the book down and rest my eyes to leave this lesson for another day and dream about things that could have been and those things that may come to pass.
