Alright, Pooly, here is the "gist" that lies behind the upcoming conflict with the Franks.
At the timeframe we are operating at (904 AD) the region we now know as France was part of the West Frankian Kingdom, after Frankia had been previously been basically been divided into the West Frankian and East Frankian kingdoms (which mostly comprises present-day Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands). King of West Frankia was Charles III the Simple.
The connection with WS: Lady Beren (whose home country seems to be an area called Lune, in present day Belgium/Netherlands) has made many a trip to the Frankian court, and during her last stay there refused the advances and lewd offerings of Charles towards her. She fled back to WS and Charles was, and still is, mightily pissed.
Several month later a Frankian trading ship, the Forell, landed in WS harbour and all was well until one of the sailors by the name of Darek beat up a pleasure girl by the name of Bethy. As it happened, Bethy was also regularly frequented by Sinold before he met Lady Halethala, and Sinold in his righteous ire (*g*) beat the man almost to death and brought him to the dingeons of WS. Agiustin there sentenced the woman beater to a sentence of 90 days in the dungeon and 20 or so lashed with the cane afterwards.
Unbeknown to most, the Captain of the Forell, Remard de Sennis, has blood ties to Darek – Darek is Remard's illicit bastard son. A fact which Remard has kept hidden from all but his uncle Vinzelles de Sennis (who is a councilor to Charles III) and the woman of low birth who is mother to Darek. Since Remard wishes success at the Frankish court, any disclosure that Darek is his son would be detrimental to him and his uncle, and thus not even Darek knows that Remard is his father.
Because he has been an arrogant arse and because some of his sailors tried to spring a trap upon Sinold while he was repairing Lady Edfeil's little boat at the beach (an assault which had been beaten back by a few of Captain Tyrun's crew!), King Agustin has ordered the crew of the Forell under arrest upon their own ship. They cannot move off their ship, however they would be free to leave harbour and leave WS. However, Captain Remard will not do so, because he will not abandon his son in the dungeons of WS, and because it will be him who will administer the caning to his own son (he has been granted that right during his last visit to Agustin before his sailors assaulted Sinold and thus made it impossible for him to leave his ship again). But he will also not leave because Agustin basically indicated to him, in so many words, that his ship might very well run into those of Tyrun and get a beating on the sea for assaulting Sinold on the beach.
So, remard and his crew stay on the Forell in WS's harbour until Darek will have served his punishment.
The good Captain, however, secretly sends one of his men, Eurich, off board and to Frankia to get help. Eurich arrives at the Frankish court and tells Remard's uncle, Councillor Vinzelles de Sennis, about what has happened in WS. Vinzelles tells king Charles, who is still pissed by Lady Beren's rejection of him, and agrees to send an expedition force to Windstorm. Their reasoning being that a Viking presence in the realm of a christian King like Agustin cannot be tolerated since the Franks have endured many a raid by the Vikings already and another operational HQ as WS would be for them right now can only mean more attacks on the Frankish realm. Also, they strongly object to the treatment of the crew of the Forell ( a reason which they will not press because it would make them look petty and only out for revenge).
Vinzelles convinces Charles to send 10 ships to WS – 6 of the ships will land on the southern coast of Wessex (under the command of Captain Manassier), making troops ready to march from the south on to WS is needed, while Vinzelles and his best freind Lamont Duchesne take 4 ships directly to WS (Maybe Vinzelles will decide to land North of WS and then ride to WS).
Meanwhile, one of Vinzelles most loyal men, Raimbault, has been send with troops to Lhun, lady Beren's homeland, to occupy the land so the Franks will have a bargaining pawn in their hands.
