Carefully Rainald was draping his thic winter cloak around his shoulders as he sat in front of the fireplace of his chambers in Windstorm. He shivered. The cold never seem to leave his bones these days, and his appetite had been bad this whole last year. Winter months especially had become harder for him to bear, and these days he was mainly keeping to his own chambers, avoiding the company of the Windstorm court.
He coughed a bit, then picked up a letter he had received from the West Frankian court from his friend Lamont. Things had been difficult back home .... as had been his own private situation here. The proposed wedding to Lady Jessica had been called off, there were just too many difficulties to resolve, and Rainald had felt his strength fading slowly but steadily, or so he felt. - His eyes closed and he let his head fall back against the back of his chair.
"Would have been nice, to have the comfort of a woman once again!"
He spoke to himself rather than anyone in particular, but immediately snapped out of his revery and turned his head towards his bed, scanning the young man laying on there with care and love.
Gernot was sleeping peacefully, resting before the evening meal after a long day of weapon's training. How much he loved his son! Now, at 14, he was almost ready to be announced a young man with all full rights and privilages. He would advance from squire to full knight within thge next two years ... for him alone Rainald found it was worth to keep going! - Rubbing his nose, the Frank ambassador picked up another letter and started reading, deciding how to act on some of the happenings at the West Frankish court.
Finally, he reached for a piece of dry bread and a few dried pieces of meat, chewing them without gusto, forcing them down with little sips of warm cider ... Yes ... he would have loved the warm embrace of a woman right now, and quietly he chuckled. Maybe never again ....strangely, his thoughts turnbed on another woman he secretly admired and even coveted. Lady de Lune ....
He smiled, but it was a tired and weary smile, formed out of the realisation of the impossible.
