*She had done it. Somewhat stupefied, she sat in the linnen closet. It was large. It was dry. It was quiet, unless someone came in to get something of course. And it was blissfully tranquil and feminine. She had send off the letter to Kent. And to Fryseland.
She had actually had guards run Ulbrecht down to whatever tavern they could find him in -she had not asked- and bring him to her so she could nae change her mind. They had found, and asked, and found the Captain immediately prepared to see Her Majesty. She had nae explained much, simply requested him to convey a missive to his Father in Fryseland at the next possible tide. If he had found it a strange request, he had nae said anything, save a courteous agreement.
And now she sat here, hiding in the linnen closet, staring at the pristine boiled and smoothed linnens around her and wondering if she had actually lost her mind.

*The last letter had troubled her greatly, not so much the content but the manner it which it had been delivered. She could only imagine the scene, and it frightened her to believe any harm could befall her new found friends. She had been thinking all day of how to reply without sounding too concerned, such would not bode well to have them worry over her worrying over them.
She carried a small pile of freshly laundered sheets in the crook of her arm, leaving the other free to lift the latch on the cupboard door. She made no bones about entering and was certainly not quiet in any way, as she expected it to be empty save for the stocks of linens that resided therin. Stepping back in shock and almost horror to see you, she quickly looked about to make sure nobody else was there for what reason she did not even think. Her eyes wide she just blurted the words out.*
"Edfeil.......what on earth.......ye look as though ye have seen a ghost......whatever ails ye?!"

*She jerked upright herself. Nae having expected any and for a moment she stared at ye. And then... she laughed.* Oh... Oh my... *the laugh turned to chuckle and then she rushed past ye to close the door to the linnen closet. Clearly it would nae do to be found here thus.*
I am well.. *mayhap it were the nerves that made her burst out laughing again, but here they were, both in the linnen closet. At least ye actually had linnens with ye.* I am well. *she repeated, though the laughter faded to seriousness. Ye were her friend. She could nae make any official announcements to any, nae before everything had been settled. But she could take to a friend. In the linnen closet.
I .. sent off the letters. *she declared. As iffen that said anything. But then, realizing it did nae she added.* One to Kent. One to Fryseland.
*she took a deep breath* I think... I will be married soon.

*In truth she knew not which of them was more frightened at that moment. Edfeil rushed to close the door, her face still pale, then she was laughing. Then she was serious, then laughing again......her mind obviously not as it should be. Dream turned a full circle watching her Queen before the spoken words actually settled within her mind.*
"I .. sent off the letters..... One to Kent. One to Fryseland. I think... I will be married soon."
*Now, of course the rumours were abound, stating that the Duke of Fryseland had been seen rather more often of late with the Queen, and in quiet places, quiet moments shared. The Servants were very adept at watching and learning, walls do have ears, and tongues when needed. This turn of events was not good....not good at all.
Dream stood perfectly still while she allowed all manner of visions to come......two letters....oh my word...would there be a duel, would it be both men fighting to gain her hand.....she shook her head and sat down heavily on top of a pile of laundry bags. Still clutching the fresh, clean ones within her grasp.*
"Married........letters.......oh my......oh my....Edfeil.....what have ye done?" was all she could say.....

*She frowned then, clearly puzzled at yer reaction. . And mayhap now that the strangeness of the situation seemed to fade a wee bit into acceptance of the fact that both of them now had found refuge in the linen closet, she was able to look at ye closer. She nae had expected this. Surprise, mayhap. Though she nae thought it was a secret... after all.. she had made her intentions clear openly last yule. A wee bit of apprehension mayhap. She nae knew how well Dream had had a chance to get to know Gregor. But.. the clear worry.. well neigh horror that she saw within her friends eyes surprised her.*
Aye... two letters.
*She looked at ye a moment longer, sitting there on the laundry as iffen ye feared the worst. Could it be? Was there something about the Duke she nae knew? A problem? A secret? She nae thought Dieter would have let her progress with things so far iffen there was a problem. He had been very open about his own... affliction. Her mouth opened for a moment before she spoke.*
I thought ye knew? That is... it nae be a secret, aye? The Duke and I have been... seeing iffen we would suit. I thought ye knew. I nae thought ye would disapprove. I mean.. he be an honourable man, I believe. Aye? And this be the.. only way to go forward with things. We can nae leave this unresolved much longer. I thought... well, I was sure ye would understand. I know there be challenged with such an approach, but well, we have faced challenges before, aye?
*She sat down herself, on another laundry bag. The scent of lavender and herbs filled the air around them and the linens, well, except for the one ye were clutching, were so neat and ordered, it was... soothing in a way. And nae matter what was going on, 't was good to share it. Iffen she was to have bad news, she would prefer to receive it from a friend.*
((*LOL* Oh, if Edie could only read Dream's mind! *grins*))

This was clearly what some would call a conundrum, perhaps a misunderstanding or just a confusing situation. Of course Edfeil as sweet as she was, could so very often be confusing. Dream sat listening, making more sense of what her friend was saying, but still she was concerned about why two letters. Her features not yet showing pleasure , but not showing displeasure either. In truth she was still confused. "Oh....indeed I had been hearing the rumours and gossips......and a fine fellow I am sure he be...the Duke I mean....well, I have met him but the once and he seemed a fine fellow." She almost said he had good teeth but thought better of that lest it confused them both even more and this was no time for such frivolity. "A goodly match ye shall make I am sure....but.....and I understand ye would have to write to his homeland, etiquette and all.....but Kent.....what do ye expect from Kent....iffn Sighehelm still wishes yer hand, what would ye do iffn he turned up on bended knee now?"Her words were spoken calmly yet carried the importance and graveness of the situation she had envisaged within her mind. "How would ye choose iffn ye had both before ye on bended knee......oh my.....such does nae bear thinking of!"((*L* I would never even TRY to read Edfeil's mind!! ))

*She stood once more, took the folded sheet ye had brought into the closet and started smoothing the top of . It gave her something to with her hands. Iffen there was more room here, she might pace. But her voice was soft and determined when she replied to ye.*
Iffen there was a chance that Sighehelm would be before me, on bended knee and asking for me hand, Dream, I would nae have humiliated meself by announcing to the world I was in need of a husband and iffen they could help me find one. It's been two years since last I had a tiding from Kent.
*Her hands were nae cramped. Quite oft, the movement of her fingers would betray more than her face. She had learned to school her features into serenity, yet nae hands, and nae ever her eyes. There was sadness there, but an acceptance too.*
We were courting. We were in the negotiations for a betrothal. And then... naught. *She shook her head and took a breath.* We all expected his brother to wed, yet Righarde has nae done so. Without an heir from Righarde, Kent would nae be able to release Sighehelm to live in Windstorm, now would they?
*She put the sheet back on one of the shelves, then took out another folded sheet to start smoothing it unncessarily.*
I wrote him. A year ago. *It was nae an easy subject and she was grateful for the distraction at her hands. She had still had hope then. Had believed that the dream that he would come. That he would be able to convince Righarde to marry. That he would find a way to return to Windstorm and wed her. And she had waited for many a month, hoping each time when a messenger had been announced she would see the familiar colours of Kent. If it was just about her, she would remain waiting. But it was nae.* I near begged him to come for me. Yet he nae came. I know his heart would nae change, so it must be.. duty that binds him in Kent. And binds his heart away from mine. So I had to write one last time, and set his heart free for another. And his hand.
*She thought of the Lady Jessica Douglas who had loved the Rock of Kent. Mayhap that was a marriage that would now take place. He had felt kindly towards her at least. And the Douglas family would be a good match. She did not cry. She had cried too much over this. Instead, with a last determined pat, she put the sheet back on the shelf and looked straight at ye.*
I said farewell in me letter to Kent, dearest of friends. The ballad of the pebble and the Rock be to an end. As it must be.
((Would be dangerous indeed. One could get lost in the maze. *chuckles*))

Dream felt the colour draining from her cheeks as her Queen spoke.......she also felt rather sick in her stomach. Of course, now it all made sense.....such sense.....she had been wrong.....more wrong than perhaps she had ever been. For a moment she could not find the words, how difficult writing to Kent must have been for her...... Dream's heart went out to her friend in that moment before she finally spoke.
"Oh Edfeil.....can ye forgive me....I have been so foolish......I have wronged ye in my mind and imagined all the wrong things...how could I have thought such of ye.....please......my friend, I am so sorry......tell me how ye feel about this man, The Duke.......tell me ye give yer heart to him and nae simply for the good of Windstorm.....tell me yer heart 'tis skipping when ye think of him or say his name?"
She stood then, the linens scrunched between them as she forgot all about etiquette and royal composure, simply holding ye close and whispering softly to yer ear.
"I am so happy for ye......"

*She held on tight. Leaning her face on her friends shoulder, the sheeth crumpled ridiculously between the two of them. If any could see them thus they would surely think them both mad. Yet it felt so good to lean on somebody, somebody who had known her for almost all these years. Somebody who had known her before she had the slightest authority and nae a duty save to be kind and hospitable to all in the King's household. She nae knew what her friend had thought of her. Mayhap later, one day, she would ask. Now she just held on. Yet then the question came that she had feared would come once the engagement was announced.
She nae let go. It was easier to reply when nae facing her friend. She knew the answer she wanted to hear, the answer they would all want to hear. That she had fallen madly in love with the duke. That their hearts were afire for one another. It was what King Agustin had wanted. What her friends had wanted for her all through the years. Yet lightning was nae likely to strike twice in such a way, was it?*
He be a good man. *That she could say with certainty. She would nae have moved forward, making the courtship official iffen he had nae been a good man.*
I am certain we will be happy, me friend. Content even. It be a goodly thing aye? Be happy.. oh aye, be happy for me.

Dream could do no more than to hold her close and listen to her words......of course the Queen believed it a good match, of course she believed they would be happy as they ruled together, and Dream was certain he was a good man.
There was no more to say.....
Edfeil may be seen to some as a young and naive woman who had Royalty thrust upon her but many, including Dream knew differently. She had a strong mind and will, a gentle heart yet firm and a loving nature that extended to all in need. She made her own decisions even though it looked as if she took notice of other's opinions and the coming marriage announcement was proof of such. Edfeil was a Queen, there was no doubt anymore, and all the lands would see such from this day forth.
There was no more to say.....
Dream stepped back, gently unwinding herself from her Queen and smiled softly to the eyes that spoke far more than words ever could. She held the crumpled linens in her hands and began to brush them over in an attempt to smooth them again. If only everything in life was as simple as smoothing linens.
"I am happy for ye both M'Lady, truly I am, and I look forward to celebrating such when ye announce the Wedding date......of course ye will be content and mayhaps ye will be blessed with children, I do so hope for ye."
The door latch began to lift and she could hear the girls giggling outside. Perhaps their timing was perfect. With that she leaned in to kiss your cheek gently before leaving the cupboard with a curtsy, gathering up the twins as she went and leaving Edfeil to her own quiet thoughts a while longer.
"Come now girls I am in need of extra hands, what have I told ye of listening at keyholes!"

She needed to get dressed quickly. Throwing on a frock pulling up her sunny blonde hair, she hadn’t time to primp. …. Pulling on heavy stockings and Giggling at her absent mindness sometimes, realizing she seldom wore the may layers of under clothing that ladies were expected to drone. S he reached for her petticoat…. And it did take her a few minutes to locate it. Once she located it she stretched it out in front of her because what she feared was so. It was strained with grape juice. Since it was the only petticoat she possessed, and a gift from Captain Tyrun, she pulled it on anyway, knowing no one would see it. Unlatching the door and pulling it open, she picked up the two baskets of dipped candles. With a little bounce in her step, and half skipping, she made her way to the castle…. It truly was a miracle she didn’t trip and fall as hap hazard as she seems to be this day.
At the main door she heard it, aye, there it was, the big bee!!!!… And it was still in the basket of hyssop and lavender blossoms… getting nice and fat. She grimsed just thinking about the sting it could wallop she didn’t go near it. She knew what would happen… she would get stung and swell up like a bloated big, and she would have to heal herself!
Setting down the baskets of candles, she put her whole body into opening the heavy wood main doors to the castle. She knew they opened hard, so with all her might she squeezed the latch as she pushed one open. The door flew open, leaving much cooler air escape from the interior than was outside. ….. She paid no mind; she had set her sights on delivering the candles. Standing now in the main hall, she could see no one, and bending over a bit at the waist even looked under the main table. No ONE! She concentrated on calming her breathing so that she might ascertain any life sounds. … She stood very still, and aye… she could hear muffled voices, ladies voices, calm voices… and she moved towards them…. She followed the sound to a door off the hall which led to the infirmary. She could hear two ladies… and being somewhat afraid..She leaned over and put her ear up to the key hole……

((Super to have you join in Stina.....I shall scoop you up and away too!))
"Dream closed the door behind her and was both surprised and delighted to see Laurestina with the twins. For a moment she was unsure just what to do or say, if she allowed Stina entry and found Edfeil, then an explanation would be required, she was not certain the Wedding was to be known to all just yet. If she took her away, would that seem rude, to leave Edfeil alone......she really was in a quandary, but decided to take one of the baskets Stina was holding and smile warmly*
"Come Stina, show me what ye have been making......and I just know ye will ave a tale or two to tell us iffn we share some tea aye."
((Leaving you able to either accept or call us all back Eddie *S*...not sure if you wished to continue in the cupboard with the staff or begin a new thread with the proper announcement so as all can contribute.))

((Okay.. I am tempted to pull you both back in and have us squished into the cupboard, just for the comedy factor. Or we could move to the infirmary to speak of things. Can't do an official announcement yet, since we still need to go through the process of titles and settlements. *LOL* What do you prefer? Closet, or infirmary?))
