Honorable Markgraaf de Foria,
I herewith officially challenge you to a duel, the weapon of your choosing, to be fought during the festivities within Windstorm Castle this coming weekend. I wish it known, I will respectfully decline a combat by fists.
Through honor, bound to God,
Sighehelm of Kent

* sighs as she reads over a letter that laid ready for posting .... *
Her heart pounding very hard, thinking to herself, these men take this most seriously, ....* takes a seat* Breathing in and out slowly, trying to remain calm, for this would be her first offical sparring event.

*chuckling softly, he shook his head as he limped away from the board. So serious, so sever. Their formalities and requests defeated the purpose of them in his mind. Duels were to test skill, to demonstrate one's prowess. They were another way to express the joy of living and moving within that life. To humans, it seemed they were but a reason to test their pride. Proper methods, poor reasons. Chuckling still, he limped away from the boards to work more on his carvings*

Where in Sighe's letter does it state it is not done to test skill, to demonstrate one's prowess?

OOC: Yes they are. And it doesn't say that anywhere. The thing is, is the formallity if it. To lucien, you are gonig to a festival, to enjoy and laugh, times to relax and cherish life. Yet here you are posting formal requests, so serious. Lucien really doesn't see the need for that. If you show up and duel, laugh your way through it, keep a smile on. If you win, you win, you win. You lose, you lose. All of these formal requests and in the case of others, demands of honor, make little sense to him. If you are gonig to do something, do it for the laughter and story it will make. Makes things much better the next morning when you readjust the bandages. *grin*

*Ponders as she reads.......wondering mayhaps iffn one might challenge another simply to be able to tell one's offspring upon a dark evening by the fireside....that they once had the honour of sparring with another held in such high esteem.
She hoped that the injuries would be minimal as the Festival is indeed for enjoyment......and yet always there is the element of mayhaps learning and honing ones skills....sparring against a seasoned veteran as M'Lord Daniel and Sir Dorian.
She smiled then....of course...what did she know of these things......only that there was honour and courage in representing one's home.....or even one's new found friends.*

…Arriving from many hurried travels about many lands, with the all too short stop in Windstorm to support their fine event of the Trivia Contest. The large aged table in my office offering me room to work is piled high with parchments delivered while I was away.
One, bearing the hand of one I have come to wonder of, reads as a challenge. Opening it I read on that it is indeed a challenge, I could hope only meant to add life to the Sparing Contest held in Windstorm, which I regrettably, could not attend.
It Reads: Honorable Markgraaf de Foria, I herewith officially challenge you to a duel, the weapon of your choosing, to be fought during the festivities within Windstorm Castle this coming weekend.
I wish it known, I will respectfully decline a combat by fists.
Through honor, bound to God, Sighehelm of Kent
My first reading places this challenge squarely in the context of the events in Windstorm and I regret not being able to have seen the event or responded to this challenge in a timelier manner. The comment of "combat by fists" causes a smile and laugh as this was no doubt brought in bu His Majesties directions to Lord Hawkmoon and Sinold. I set the parchment aside as I read through the many other matters of Eenheid I have let fall wanting while in Windstorm, but the words call me to again lift and re read the Challenge.
This man, Sighehelm of Kent, has struck a cord in my mind with this. Was this as simple as I deem? Many a man in my years, challenges by young men seeking to make a name have called me to arms. Many times I have also responded letting a name pass unknown into history as another fallen senselessly by arrogance and pride. Was this challenge for the betterment of the event in Windstorm or did my mind see something more in his eyes. Leaning back in the chair reading the note again I envision the large man as it was written, his face, his strokes with the quill that wrote it and the eyes of the man.
Yes, I have watched his eyes while in Windstorm, always calculating, cunning, never at ease unless they are falling upon the Princess Edfeil. Then the eyes show what he may not wish known. Sighehelm of Kent was indeed with eyes for the Jewel of Windstorm. Had I known this and in knowing, he has sought to position himself somehow with this challenge? This is a motive I must discern, for why else would he proffer a challenge to one near twice his age and with no formal standing within Windstorm?
I will send a messenger to Windstorm, to thank them for the warm welcome of Layla and I for the Trivia Contest and to discern the first bit of information that may lead to indeed squaring off with this man Sighehelm of Kent

OOC I would say you have.
It was meant with deepest respect, and I cannot imagine Sighehelm has shown anything BUT respect to Daniel.
Seems to be a running theme."Sighehelm? Oh, let's distrust him.
It is not how I envisioned my gentle Giant, but I will go with the flow, is OK with me.

-He reads the message, but fails to understand what the Markgraaf means. Indeed he finds it a shame that the challenge was not answered. Of all men he had met, this one seemed one to match his strength with, an honorable man.
He smiles, realising the phrase in which he refused a fight by fists might seem odd. He had his reasons, and it was just a minor request.
Now what was he to answer in return? He sits and writes in answer-
Honorable Markgraaf de Foria ,
I thank you for your words in reply. They puzzle me, and I cannot but answer that my actions had no other motive but to honor a strong man, one I believe I can trust. To know more of the man, and to match my strength and cunning to his, in honor of the Windstorm sparring festival.
Through honor, bound to God,
Sighehelm of Kent
