*The morning found them dressed and ready to start a new day, giggling together, they went over the plans Lady Loxley had spoken briefly with them of before she retired last evening. She had seemed excited and pleased about the idea, apparently having spoken with Lady Edfeil in hushed tones lest the other ladies had heard them. The twins were even more excited as they made their way to the hen house.
Millie lifted the latch and both girls stepped back quickly as the hens flew out. Mollie cringed and hid behind her Sister....for all her brash exterior, she was afraid of the chickens and confined spaces, so she stayed outside with the basket whilst 'Millie the brave' ventured inside.
Egg after egg was passed between careful hands.....the odd grunt from Millie as a stubborn hen pecked at her....displaying in no uncertain terms that she would rather keep her prize. When she emerged, her hair was tangled with straw, and her features flushed.....Mollie did no more than to laugh and pick out some of the straw.
They looked at the basket and started to count them...this was no easy feat as they could only get to 5 at a time. Mollie decided to count in 5's and it was decided there were indeed one dozen....give or take a few. They grinned and skipped back to the kitchens leaving the hens to eat their morning feed and enjoy the early morning sunshine.
Cook had already made ready the pot of water, it was not quite boiling yet, and carefully he placed in one egg at a time. The girls meanwhile continued with their whispers and giggles as he conducted the most important task and set his candle clock. He seemed to be in control.....the look of concentration upo his face made them chuckle even more, he turned to them and growled several times. They simply blew him kisses and got on with the second part of their duties for the day.
Lady Loxley had already borrowed some painting materials from the Lady Laurestina's work place.....she had hoped of course that this would be alright to do so, and had left them in the servery for the girls. They spent a while placing all the pretty coloured inks onto a tray, adding several pots of clear water. Millie decided to test one of the brushes and stroked her Sister's cheek with it. This of course made the Twin giggle and a playful tickling contest ensued untill Cook's voice bellowed through the Castle!
A skip and run later, they had all the hard boiled eggs gathered into the basket. Huge grins were still in place as they returned to the servery and between them gathered everything up, carrying it all to the Hall and placing all the materials upon the table.
Mollie stood watch a moment as her devious Sister took out 2 freshly washed eggs from her apron pocket.....they both stemmed a giggle as she placed them with great care in amongst the hard ones. One final check that everything was ready...they hugged each other and could not contain their laughter as they ran from the room.
The evening would find them peeking in to see exactly what would happen.*
