It had been remarked upon, first among just a few of the guards. Then more clearly in general rumours through the household. In truth though, amidst the growing business of the season and the upcoming betrothal, it had taken weeks before the queen had noticed it. The large form of Prince Dieter had nae been seen in the hall anymore. He was still in the castle, or on the lands. He was patrolling. He was conferring with the guards. He was working diligently to keep the castle safe in Kyle's absence. But he had nae been easy to find, or to speak to. It seemed he had thorn himself asunder from the fabric of the castle slowly but certainly.
And then the rumours had grown. There had been the quarrel with Captain Ulbrecht where the guards had near feared them coming to blows. It was rumoured by some that perhaps things were getting out of hand? On Prince Gregor's advice she had spoken to him then, quietly and privately. He had nae denied isolating himself but spoken of words said to one he should nae have hurt with them.
It had not taken Edfeil long to reach her conclusion. Cara. And trusting in the goodwoman's kindness of heart, she nae had hesitated trying to put the large man in black at ease. Yet the next days had nae seen a change, on the contrary. 't was said Dieter's countenance had grown more miserable and stony as ever.
And when speaking to Cara, the goodwoman nae had memory of any quarrel or ill spoken words between them. The puzzle had grown. And yet 't had nae been till Gregor, Cara and Edfeil had sat together again and spend time trying to find the answer that they had come upon it: Edfeil.
Their return from Fryseland had seen a conversation between them that had nae gone well. Dieter had been pressing for assurance mayhap on the upcoming nuptials. But all she had heard was doubt, doubt that she would be good enough, doubt that she would be able to give enough. And with tears in her eyes, and a feeling of failure, she had retreated. And now those tears had grown in Dieter's eyes to a wound brought to the one he had sworn to protect. If he was nae to be trusted in small matters, how could he be trusted with the larger one. A man steeped in honor would worry over such, and over his own worth, or the danger in his presence.
