It was the first time they had received someone with more of suspicion than welcome. She would always berate herself for that. It was nae that the young woman by herself seemed a threat. She had seemed shy, almost overwhelmed when she had entered the hall. Edfeil's motherly instincts would have taken over normally, if it had nae been for the words the guard had said. She was here to look for Kyle Draven. Nae a wonder they had been on high alert. It was nae that they had been.. unkind, she would nae have allowed that. But there had been tension and questions. Until Kyle himself, alerted to her presence had come down and embraced her.
A niece. From a branch of the family she nae had known of. Thank heavens, was the first thought, that she had found Windstorm. Thank heavens that she was well. It must have been a burden of Kyle's mind. Contentment and care had taken over, until a letter surfaced. A letter that Rosen had been carrying for weeks or even months, but nae had been able to read. Like most of those who worked the land mainly, she nae had learned her letters. While Rosen was travelling those of her kin that had remained in the village had been sought out and killed. Men and women, too old to travel. So they had send their niece out to search for their younger cousin. Had they known something?
Her own hands had been shaking and colour had disappeared from her skin, before she had had to utter the words and tell Rosen what the missive she had cherished said. Dieter beside her, already on edge by what had been happening the last weeks had his uncle sent for and had left the castle, armed to the teeth. She worried of him. She worried of Kyle too. And her heart welled over in compassion with Rosen. All she had known seemed gone, by a few scribbled letters on parchment. Satine had offered aide, and comfort. And the young woman, Adele de Blakeland that had been their guest for a few days now had been kind in offering her help and that of her guard Jenkins.
She had an extra guard now. And Rosen had one, soon to be two with the last chosen from the elite group that had been training by Dieter and Hawkmoon. Pray God they would keep her at least safe. She nae knew, even now, what she would have to say to Kyle. Yet she feared what this last tiding would do to him.
