The Promise of Schooling had been given weeks afore, and let us naught forget the exchange of stipend, to help the family along. There had been talk of sending the lad to learn from the Monks for a time and that might still come to pass however for the first couple months, mayhaps e'en till the start of the New Year, Cara decided she would take a small amount of time each day and work with the lad.
The meeting with His Parents had gone quite well, though the lad was no mere tot anymore it was still up to his Da what the lad would be allowed. Ander's parents had been quite beside themselves, as they had been when the Prince's offer was made. But when they tried to offer a mite of coin for the lessons she merely laughed merrily and shook her head Nay...I'll naught be needin it. Take that amount there and hire a hand from the village, e'en that small amount will see a hire well on a few weeks. The rest ye will promise me, till the time Ander goes off to schooling away, ye will use it to see the family has proper food when ye run low, and ifn there be aught left by the end of the month ye will save it up and get at least one new set of garments for each of ye.
The man's shock had been palpable at that jest before Cara had produced a small ledger with quill and ink. I'll na keep him all day for I have duties me'self, which is why I told ye ta save da coin ye were given, at least for a small time. Da stipen while he learns will most likely come once a month, all else till He goes off ta schooling I will see to...Lest the Prince says otherwise eh?
With a laugh Cara waves Ander on as they make their way up to the Castle and inside for a time. Catching the lad round the shoulders as he seems to stop, letting that old worry creep into him again. Once caught he is led back to the Librarium where sits a small table and several chairs. Seeing no one about to disturb with the lessons the lad is playfully plunked down in a seat there as Cara takes the one beside.
First order of business is to teach the lad how to care for and use the ink and quill, and how to hold the quill properly so as naught to break its stem or its tip. That chore takes at least half an hour as she knew it might, before Ander begins becoming comfortable with the tool in his hand. For the next hour they begin to work on the beginning three letters in the Latin Alphabet, being it is the language most written here.
Showing him how to write just those three letters alone, Cara had him take three sheets of parchment, a written letter on each page. This be yer work for the night, lad. When we meet again for yer next lesson, I wish to see all three of these papers back with front and back filled with the letter pon the top of the page eh?
With those parchments left to the top of the table to dry Cara then pulls out a one of each coin that could even remotely be seen pon Windstorm soil. Laying them flat she begins to explain the names of each coin and for a time she goes back to a peasants understanding of worth, explaining naught how much each coin be worth, but how much each coin might buy, in goods that a family such as Ander's might require....
